Theodor Christoph Schüz (1830–1900) placed everyday gestures and religious devotion within the legacy of late Romanticism. Initially preparing for a notarial career in Herrenberg, he turned to artistic training in Stuttgart before entering the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1856 to study with Carl von Piloty. He settled in Düsseldorf in 1866. Noon Prayer at the Harvest, painted in 1861 and held by the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, brings rural labour together with contemplation; it was shown at the 1867 Universal Exhibition. Schüz also worked as an illustrator, notably of Ottilie Wildermuth’s early writings. These different activities extend his interest in narratives connecting familiar life with spiritual values.
