Georges Valmier (1885–1937) grew up in Montmartre, where his family settled in 1890. The Cézanne retrospective at the 1907 Salon d’Automne contributed to his visual education. Mobilised in Toul during the First World War, he met Albert Gleizes there. His career led from early Impressionist experiments through Cubism to abstraction.
After returning to Paris, he worked with the dealer Léonce Rosenberg, who gave him a solo exhibition at L’Effort moderne in 1921. Valmier subsequently designed numerous covers for the gallery’s bulletin and contributed to the decoration of Rosenberg’s apartment. His practice extended to theatrical sets, costumes and textile designs. His compositions are held by institutions including the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Guggenheim Museum and the Musée national d’art moderne in Paris.
