Werner Frei
Born in 1907.
Died in 1983.
Largely self-taught, he nevertheless attended life-drawing classes at the Kunstgewerbeschule, the ETH and the E. Wehrli painting school in Zurich.
From 1942, he worked as an independent artist in Zollikerberg.
According to SIKART, from 1953 he turned towards abstract painting. Alongside his paintings, the documented body of work includes sculptural works—furniture, busts and figures, including theatre puppets—which the artist produced on occasion.
He exhibited several times in Switzerland and, in 1962, presented works at the Shirokiya Gallery in Tokyo. According to the notice consulted, in 1977 the Kunsthaus Zürich organised a retrospective focused on his final creative period, shown at the Helmhaus.
He took part in projects described as “art in construction”, including an intervention for CFF/SBB.
