The Lucerne painter Walter Küng developed a figurative body of work closely grounded in the observation of nature and place. Oil painting forms the core of his known production, executed on canvas, wood, board and fibreboard supports.
Landscape was central to his repertoire. The shores and mountains of Central Switzerland, Mount Pilatus, the Rotsee and Lake Lucerne became motifs for paintings attentive to season, light and the tangible character of a site. His subjects also included places encountered in travel, as evidenced by views of the Mediterranean coast and Paris.
Küng also painted floral still lifes, flowering branches and plants, as well as figures and genre scenes. Documented early works further demonstrate his engagement with the realist tradition of Robert Zünd: several auction catalogues explicitly identify these paintings as copies after Zünd.
In 2017, Galleria il Tesoro in Altendorf presented a retrospective of more than fifty paintings and drawings from the Anna and Paul Bucher collection. The 1961 painting Le printemps au bord du lac des Quatre-Cantons belongs fully within this body of work.
