Walter Küng
Born in Lucerne (Switzerland) in 1919.
Died in Lucerne (Switzerland) in 2000.
Swiss · Figurative painting · landscape, still life and genre subjects.
The Lucerne painter Walter Küng developed a figurative body of work closely linked to the observation of nature and place. Oil painting forms the core of his known production, executed on canvas, wood, cardboard and fibreboard panels.
Landscape occupies a central place in his repertoire: the shores and terrain of Central Switzerland, Mount Pilatus, Lake Rotsee and Lake Lucerne become the subjects of a painting attentive to the seasons, the light and the tangible presence of the land. His gaze also extends to sites encountered on his travels, as evidenced by views of the Mediterranean coast and Paris.
The landscapes are complemented by still lifes of flowers, flowering branches and plants, as well as figures and genre scenes. Some documented early works also testify to his engagement with Robert Zünd’s realist tradition, through copies explicitly identified as such in sales catalogues.
In 2017, Galleria il Tesoro in Altendorf devoted a retrospective to the artist, bringing together more than fifty paintings and drawings from the Anna and Paul Bucher Collection. Le printemps au bord du lac des Quatre-Cantons, painted in 1961, forms a fully integral part of this corpus.
The works by Walter Küng presented by Swiss Art Gallery extend this artistic journey and take their place naturally within this corpus.
