Verena Broger
Born in 1943.
Verena Broger is a figurative artist whose work is associated with popular and regional pictorial practices. Her work is characterised by an idiom described as “naïve” and encompasses painting, drawing and printmaking, with particular attention to the Bauernmalerei (peasant painting) of the Appenzellerland.
Initially trained as a Textilentwerferin (textile designer/draughtswoman), she grew up in a family environment oriented towards the arts, a setting that, according to the biography consulted, contributed to her artistic direction. In 1972 she moved to Appenzell, which became central to the subject matter of her paintings; the SIKART entry lists her under identifier 4003805.
The biography notes that her paintings seek to compose images of “ease, zest for life and harmony” (“Gemächlichkeit, Lebenslust und Harmonie”), a thematic orientation consistent with her engagement with rural motifs and the peasant tradition of the Appenzellerland. These themes recur in publicly cited work titles such as Sennebueb mit drei Ziegen, Heimgang vom Markt and Alpfahrt bei Schnee, as well as in other titles listed on a sales page, including Apfelernte im Appenzellerland, Vier Jahreszeiten and Winterszene mit Säntis.
According to the same biography, the colour palette of her work has evolved: earlier phases are said to be characterised by a more pastel palette, while brighter and more intense colours predominate in the more recent works. This chromatic shift forms part of a multifaceted practice encompassing painting, drawing and printmaking, although the sources consulted provide no detailed chronology of the works.
Several titles appear on the sales page consulted, where they are presented as offered or sold; these references illustrate the range of themes the artist explores (market scenes, seasonal work, village festivals and winter landscapes). Based in Appenzell since 1972, Broger foregrounds, in a style rooted in local tradition, a vision of peasant life imbued with visual comfort and enjoyment.
