The son of Else-Lotte Fellner (née Wyler), a painter, and Carl Fellner, a psychiatrist, he is also described as « the brother of the artist Tom Fellner ».

Initially trained in the United States, he completed a bachelor’s degree in anthropology at the University of Washington (Seattle) between 1977 and 1982, before continuing his studies at University College London, where he obtained a master’s degree in archaeology in 1984 and a doctorate in 1993; his doctoral research focuses in particular on Develier‑Courtételle, a rural Merovingian settlement.
