Susanne Zweifel is a painter based in Meinisberg, in the Bernese Seeland region. Born in Basel, she has lived and worked in this region since 1979 and has exhibited regularly in Switzerland since 1997.
Her painting practice began with watercolour: her website presents a group of works made between 1997 and 2002. She subsequently turned to experimental acrylic painting on canvas, developing her approach through self-directed exploration. Her repertoire embraces both abstract compositions and figurative subjects, with a sustained interest in the expressive possibilities of colour.
Relief and textured surfaces give her paintings a presence beyond the flat picture plane. Carefully balanced, often warm tonal relationships bring forms and materials into harmony. Ammonites occupy a distinctive place in this work.
Having first used them in jewellery, she introduced their forms into her painting, modelling them directly onto the canvas with plaster and sometimes finishing them with a delicate golden sheen.
From 2010 to 2019, Susanne Zweifel exhibited and sold her work in her own gallery on Bern’s Münsterplatz. Galerie Pellegrini in Murten presented an exhibition of her paintings from 8 to 30 May 2021. Her exhibition history also includes presentations in Aarau in 2023–2024 and Pieterlen in 2024, alongside participation in ArtEiss in Ins in 2025.
The works by Susanne Zweifel presented by Swiss Art Gallery extend this artistic journey and take their place naturally within this corpus.
