Stefan Banz

Born in 1961.

Died in 2021.

Stefan Banz lives and works in Switzerland; he is identified in the sources as an artist and author.

In 1989, he participated in the founding of Kunsthalle Luzern and served as its artistic director until 1993. From 1994 to 1997, he was artistic adviser to Galerie Hauser & Wirth. In 2000, he received the Prix Manor as well as the City of Lucerne’s recognition award.

In curatorial and collaborative contexts, he was appointed curator of the Swiss Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005; from 2004 to 2014, he developed an artistic collaboration with Caroline Bachmann and, together with her, founded the association KMD (Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp) in 2009, assuming its artistic direction and organising for it the symposium “Marcel Duchamp and the Forestay Waterfall” in 2010.

As an artist, he notably presented, as a guest of the EAC (les halles), Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp – The Forestay Museum of Art (KMD) as a dispositif/exhibition; biographical accounts also identify him as having participated in solo and group exhibitions in international galleries and museums.

He is also listed as an author: the book Marcel Duchamp: Richard Mutt's Fountain was published by Les presses du réel on 13 July 2020 (an English-language edition is mentioned); other editions and publishers connected with his work (Verlag für moderne Kunst; Art&fiction) are indicated in the consulted documentary file.

In light of the information provided, his career combines activity as an artist and author with institutional and curatorial responsibilities, marked by the founding and direction of spaces (Kunsthalle Luzern, KMD) and by sustained collaborations.
