Paul Degen

Paul Degen is described as an illustrator, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor.

He trained in lithography in Basel, obtained a diploma from the Kunstschule Basel, and subsequently continued his training at Theo Ballmer’s graphic design studio and at the Académie Julian in Paris.

In 1970, he moved to New York, where he worked as a freelance illustrator for The New York Times, Esquire, Harper's Magazine, and The Atlantic Monthly, and collaborated at the Push Pin Studios alongside Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast. Alongside his editorial commissions, he produced posters for several airlines, with American Airlines notably being mentioned. A poster attributed to Paul Degen, entitled «Haiti – Summertime – Village» and dated circa 1970, appears in contemporary commercial offerings.

His travels included stays in Brazil, Peru, Hawaii, and Bali; he returned to New York at the end of 1988 and settled in Liestal, near Basel, in 1990. He also appears in an online list compiling Swiss painters.
