Patrick Bruggmann

Born in 1977.

A photograph dated 2008, captioned “Patrick Bruggmann, painter, artist, 2008”, appears in the available sources.

His painterly practice is based on the application, with a palette knife, of a viscous plastic mass to wooden panels; examples also describe the use of liquid plastic mixed with sand and gouache on wood. This tactile, “palette-knifed” approach is at times developed on cardboard as a “gespachtelte Mischtechnik”, and the use of grains or material elements is noted in certain works. The supports are often prepared and assembled by the artist himself—painted wooden panels and frames that are sometimes made or painted by him—which contributes to the material/object unity of the works.

A UV-protective varnish is applied to several works, cited as a means of ensuring colour stability and protecting the surface. The reverse of certain works also bears a second image by the artist, a material observation recorded for one described example.

Among the titles mentioned, the work «Seerosen» illustrates the use of liquid plastic combined with sand and gouache on wood, while «VierwaldstätterseeNEU» is described as a mixed-media work on wood measuring 117.5 x 95 cm and is offered at CHF 4'500. The work «Blaue Stunde Mouttas Muragl - St. Moritz» is noted with framed dimensions of 46 x 42.5 cm (image 36 x 32.5 cm) and a stated price of CHF 1'200. Another example, «Frühlingslandschaft in der Toskana», appears in the documentation with dimensions of 30 x 20 cm and a price indication of CHF 700.

Several notices specify that the works are signed—sometimes “links unten” (lower left) or “unten mittig” (lower centre), depending on the example. The listing for a large work indicates that it must be collected in Lucerne, illustrating the presence of works with local dealers.

His career includes a first solo exhibition at the age of 18, and it is reported that he has exhibited in several museums and galleries, with at least one work shown at Art Karlsruhe.

The commercial and gallery notices associated with certain works provide price indications and material information (format, UV varnish), which shed light on surface treatment and presentation but do not constitute an exhaustive inventory of the production.
