Otto Abt
Born in 1903.
Died in 1982.
Otto Abt is documented as an artist active in the Basel region over a long period of the twentieth century.
He opened his first studio in Basel in 1927, marking the beginning of an artistic practice established locally.
In 1936, he joined Allianz, a group of modern Swiss artists, placing his career within the artistic networks active between the two World Wars.
Together with other artists from Gruppe 33, he also participated in the development and production of the Basler Kunstlarven, the masks of the Basel Carnival.
The years of the Second World War are documented as having been spent in Ticino.
From the 1950s onwards, his practice extended across a range of media: painting on canvas, murals, stained glass, majolica-type ceramics and mosaics.
An early example of his work in ceramics is Vor Sonnenaufgang (1934), documented as a fountain decoration at the Petersschule in Basel.
The painting Aurore, dated 1935, is among the works held, according to the source, by the Kunstmuseum Basel.
In terms of public commissions, the mural Komposition (1968) is located at the Spiegelfeld-Schule in Binningen.
With regard to glasswork, the stained-glass work Jahreszeiten, executed between 1974 and 1976, was installed in the crematorium of Hörnli Cemetery in Riehen.
