Nikolaus Bertschi
Born in 1470.
Died in 1541.
Nikolaus Bertschi was an artist whose activity focused on book painting in the Lake Constance region and in Augsburg. He is recognised as an illuminator and may also have worked as a block cutter. He was the father of Nicolas Bertschyn the Younger, who was likewise an illuminator.
His oeuvre bears witness to a practice of Buchmalerei, an art form that developed in Switzerland and southern Germany during this period.
