Mathias Füssli der Ältere, I.

Born in 1598.

Died in 1665.

Mathias Füssli the Elder was a versatile artist who worked as a painter, engraver, miniaturist, and draughtsman. A pupil of Gotthard Ringgli, he continued his training in Italy before returning to Zurich by 1634 at the latest. Although he produced history paintings, supposedly influenced by Tempesta and Ribera, none of them has survived.

His drawings are preserved at the Kunsthaus Zurich. A member of a family of artists, he was the son of the goldsmith Mathias Füssli (1562–1624) and the father of Mathias Füssli the Younger.
