Maria Sibylla Merian

Maria Sibylla Merian is recognised for her varied activity as a painter of flowers and insects, engraver, watercolourist, draughtswoman, textile artist, naturalist and publisher. She belonged to the Merian family of artists and was the daughter of Matthäus Merian the Elder. Her work bears witness to a meticulous approach to nature, combining art and science, although certain aspects of her life and career remain uncertain.
