Louis Gorgerat

Frédéric Gorgerat (1825–1902) is mentioned as a painter, engraver and photographer active in Lausanne. The Gorgerat family has been documented as a bourgeois family of Boudry since the end of the fifteenth century, providing a documented regional anchorage. Among the old family archives is a Claude Gorgerat cited as governor of Bussigny and Saint‑Germain in 1557.

In the body of sources assembled for this notice, the armorial entry constitutes the principal reference listing his activity in Lausanne.

It is necessary to distinguish this artist from a namesake: Frédéric‑Albert Gorgerat who worked as a locomotive driver for the Compagnie du Jura neuchâtelois and died accidentally on 19 July 1888 on the Jura neuchâtelois line, above the Rochefort bridge (Chambrelien area). Frédéric‑Albert’s death is described as having occurred in the course of a serious railway accident: after a sand wagon became detached, the tender plate reportedly crushed him; he left a wife and two children, Albert and Paul. The contemporary notice emphasises that Frédéric‑Albert Gorgerat was valued by his superiors and loved by his comrades.

This entry brings together the available references and notes the homonymy: any attribution of works or biographical connection between the individuals named Gorgerat will require additional sources in order to be established.
