Karl Bodmer

Born in 1809.

Died in 1893.

Karl Bodmer was an artist whose oeuvre is distinguished by its diversity. A painter, illustrator and scientific draughtsman, he succeeded in capturing landscapes, animals and scenes from the lives of the Indigenous peoples of North America. His affiliation with the Barbizon School attests to his commitment to a naturalistic and realistic approach to art.

Bodmer’s contributions to the representation of nature and Indigenous cultures remain of definite interest, although uncertainties persist regarding the extent of his impact within the artistic context of his time.
