Irene Curiger
Born in 1935.
Trained at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich, she studied with Hans Neuburg and Henri Wabel in a course of instruction oriented towards abstract painting; these details place her training within a professional milieu focused on the applied arts and pictorial abstraction.
Her education was supplemented by periods of study, notably at the Sommerakademie in Salzburg under the direction of Giselbert Hoke and Paul Rotterdam, as well as by study trips to Asia, Egypt, Africa and the United States; these elements are recorded as components of her career.
Professionally, Irene Curiger is listed as a member of several artists’ organisations (SGBK, BVK, VISARTE) and of the Künstlergruppe Winterthur, and she held advisory and jury roles within the SGBK; these commitments coexist with her status as an independent artist since 1974.
The notice records numerous group participations and several solo presentations: regular group exhibitions—including the Dezember-Ausstellung der Künstlergruppe Winterthur (1985–2004)—as well as presentations at Swiss institutions such as the Kunstmuseum Winterthur, the Museum zu Allerheiligen Schaffhausen, the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Kunsthaus Glarus and the Helmhaus Zürich; a solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Winterthur in 1997 is also mentioned. In addition, she is listed among the recipients of the «Kunst in der Stadt» prize, Winterthur, in 1987.
Several work titles are noted in the documentation consulted, providing precise reference points for the identification of works or series: Ich bin auch ein Elch; Kleine Zelle; A la Plage, Ischia (1998); Mein erster Schultag bei Gottfried Salzmann (presented at Galerie Vita, 7.IV.90); Alles fliesst…; Der Magier.
