Hans Morgenthaler

Born in 1890.

Died in 1928.

Hans Morgenthaler (born 4 June 1890 in Burgdorf, died 16 March 1928 in Bern) stands out, according to the available documents, for his thorough scientific education—studies in botany and zoology culminating in a doctorate from ETH Zurich, supplemented by studies in geology at the University of Bern—and for a mountaineering practice that permeated his trajectory.

The son of Ernst Otto Morgenthaler, a lawyer and subsequently Stadtpräsident of Burgdorf, and of Luise Meta, née Rau, he was the brother of Max Morgenthaler and is recorded as unmarried.

His university education combined the natural sciences with geological studies, according to the available biographical information.

A mountaineer by vocation, he first emerged in the literary sphere in 1916 with the publication of a mountaineering journal entitled «Ihr Berge».

His publications include the work «Matahari» (1921) and the novel, biographical and amorous in tone, «Woly, Sommer im Süden» (1924).

The notice refers to health problems—malarial illness followed by tuberculosis—and to periods of convalescence in Arosa and Davos, where he notably became acquainted with the novelist Jakob Bührer and the journalist Elisabeth Thommen.
