Hans Asper

Born in 1499.

Died in 1571.

Hans Asper (c. 1499 – 21 March 1571) was a Swiss painter, born and active in Zurich. Biographical notices principally present him as a portraitist, while also noting that he produced studies of flowers and fruit.

The earliest dated works associated with him date from 1531; among these is a portrait of Ulrich Zwingli, attributed to him, painted in oil on parchment.

With regard to his training, the sources are cautious: he is said to have studied with Hans Leu the Younger and appears, from the outset of his portrait practice, to have been perceptibly influenced by the works of Hans Holbein the Younger. Biographically, in 1526 he married the daughter of Ludwig Nöggi, an event retained in the notices as a chronological reference point. His local renown is reflected in documented civic involvement: he was elected to the Zurich cantonal council in 1545.

He had a large family—eleven children—among whom two, Hans Rudolf Asper and Rudolf Asper, are cited as painters. The biography notes that a medal was struck in his honour and that, despite these marks of recognition, he died poor in 1571.

The corpus attributed to him foregrounds portraiture—exemplified by the work connected with Zwingli—as well as more modest compositions such as botanical studies; together, these genres outline a varied repertoire. Moreover, certain notices mention his participation in the illustrations for Conrad Gessner’s Historia Animalium, a reference that remains phrased as an evocation rather than an established fact. Contemporary authority records summarising the artist’s identity give the dates 1499–1571, thereby consolidating the chronological framework of his career.

Overall, the available descriptions address the elements of his training, his influences, and his collaborations with caution, employing conditional or suggestive wording where documentary evidence is lacking.
