Georges Item
Born in 1927.
Died in 1990.
The greater part of his painted oeuvre was produced in the Alpilles and the Camargue. The Mas de Cinq Sous, in Saint‑Rémy‑de‑Provence, belonged to him for approximately forty years.
Trained as a lithographer from 1943 and having attended courses at the École des Arts appliqués de Bienne, he subsequently spent six months in Paris in Bernard Clavé’s studio before staying in Italy and the Netherlands. From 1948 onwards, the local press singled him out in group exhibitions.
He held numerous exhibitions and travelled to various European countries. Alongside painting, he produced murals and left an important body of graphic work published by ARTA in Zürich. His presence on the market is attested by the mention of a sale of two works reported by the Galerie des Annonciades.
His distinctions include three grants from the Swiss Confederation (1951, 1952 and 1956), the Prix de l'Institut jurassien (1953), the Prix du Provençal at the Festival d'Avignon (1962), and the Prix du Canton des Grisons (1976).
