Frédéric Rouge first trained at the École des beaux-arts in Basel, where he was awarded a first prize, and then under the history and animal painter Walter Vigier in Solothurn. He supplemented this training with winter stays at the Académie Julian in Paris and further study in Florence. The portrait of the writer Urbain Olivier, presented at the Paris Salon, brought him early recognition.

After returning to the Vaud Chablais, Rouge established his studio at Ollon, on the Les Cèdres estate. His work remained closely connected to Aigle, the Rhône plain, the Vaud Alps and the region’s wine-growing villages, observed with a fidelity to the land that gives his painting a strong testimonial dimension.

His production encompasses portraits, genre scenes and landscapes. Woodcutters, hunters, fishermen, armaillis, vineyard work and rural sociability form a naturalist figurative repertoire; mountains, forests, lakes and the Rhône plain broaden its landscape horizon. Oils, watercolours, drawings, posters and graphic works attest to an extensive practice, nourished by a constant attentiveness to local figures, gestures and physiognomies.

Rouge’s works entered the collections of the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne and the Musée Jenisch Vevey; his regional reception was also renewed through exhibitions at the Musée Arlaud, in Ollon and at the Espace Graffenried in Aigle. The lithograph Souvenir de 1914, devoted to the mobilisation of the Swiss army, forms part of this body of work.

The works by Frédéric Rouge presented by Swiss Art Gallery extend this artistic journey and take their place naturally within this corpus.
