Ferdinand Sommer

Born in 1822.

Died in 1901.

Ferdinand Sommer was a Swiss painter active mainly in Thun from 1855 onwards. His work is characterised by landscapes and genre scenes, often presented in a Romantic light. He is distinguished by his depictions of Alpine landscapes, evoking the style of Alexandre Calame, and belongs to the tradition of the Little Masters.

Around 1870, he also held a teaching post for Ferdinand Hodler, another notable artist of his time. The details of his career and influence merit further exploration, as his trajectory appears to have been rich in artistic interactions.
