Ernst Hodel I. is recognised as a landscape painter and panorama model maker. In Lucerne, he founded the Alpineum, a space dedicated to dioramas depicting Alpine scenes that he designed and painted himself.
Hodel I. was also the father of Ernst Hodel II.
