Figurative landscape painting · views of Lake Geneva and Lavaux
A figurative painter closely associated with the landscapes of Lake Geneva, Ernest Meinen developed a repertoire centred on Lavaux, its wine-growing villages and its shores. The documented works notably depict Cully, Saint-Saphorin, Rivaz and Glérolles Castle, with Lake Geneva appearing as a recurrent element.
A work entitled Port de Cully is presented as dating from 1945, while an art-trade source places Meinen’s activity in Lavaux between the 1950s and the 1970s. The known body of work thus belongs to a tradition of regional landscape painting attentive to the topography of terraced vineyards, village settings and lakeside architecture.
Oil is the best-documented medium. Recorded formats range from compact compositions, including a 33 × 22 cm view of Lavaux, to larger paintings devoted to Glérolles Castle. The surviving titles indicate a preference for recognisable locations and for views in which the lake structures the surrounding landscape.
