Ernest Boiceau

Born in 1881.

Died in 1950.

Ernest Boiceau studied drawing, painting, and architecture at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris.

Following his training, he went through a period of travel and pictorial practice between 1900 and 1910. From the 1910s onwards, he redirected his activity towards the applied arts—embroidery, passementerie, and furnishing fabrics—which he pursued from a studio on the Rue des Moulins in Paris.

In the mid-1920s, his creative scope expanded further: he designed furniture and objects and made his first carpet, marking a transition towards complete furnishing pieces. Until 1935, his works employed rare woods—macassar, amaranth, sycamore, palmwood—sometimes enhanced with ivory or ebony inlays, and he also created lighting fixtures.

His reputation developed through carefully structured public participation, notably at the Salons d'automne of 1928 and 1929. Following this visibility, he opened a shop on the Avenue Matignon (no date is specified in the excerpts consulted).

On the market, one documented example is a carpet signed « Usines Rug », handwoven in Cornely stitch, dated circa 1930 and sold for €82,504 at a sale organised by Bonhams in Los Angeles (noted as: sale of 28 July).
