Claudio Melioli

Born in Reggio Emilia (Italy) on 21 January 1909.

Died in Reggio Emilia (Italy) in 1976.

Italian · 20th-century Italian figurative painting ¬∑ naturalistic and Romantic landscape

Claudio Melioli (Reggio Emilia, 21 January 1909 – Reggio Emilia, 1976) was an Italian painter principally devoted to landscape. He trained at the Gaetano Chierici art school in Reggio Emilia and at the Liceo Artistico in Bologna, then frequented the studio of Ottorino Davoli, whose influence remained visible in Melioli’s naturalistic and Romantic approach to landscape.

Melioli painted woodland, country paths, rural settings and figures absorbed into nature. His language remained figurative, seeking atmosphere and spatial depth rather than strict topographical description. A major posthumous retrospective was organised in Reggio Emilia in 1978, accompanied by a 120-page catalogue edited by Alfredo Gianolio and reproducing forty-five works.

A further exhibition followed from 23 February to 21 March 1985 at the Sala del Capitano del Popolo.

His place in Reggio Emilia’s artistic heritage is confirmed by public holdings. The regional heritage catalogue documents « Paesaggio autunnale », a 1958 oil, while the Musei Civici included Melioli in the 2016–2017 exhibition « Tutto Quadra ». On the secondary market, Cambi offered the signed large-format « Paesaggio con viandanti » in 2022 with an estimate of EUR 100–200; it remained unsold.

The works by Claudio Melioli presented by Swiss Art Gallery extend this artistic journey and take their place naturally within this corpus.
