Claude Sauthier
Born in 1929.
Died in 2016.
The Genevan painter and graphic designer Claude Sauthier (born in Geneva on 2 February 1929; died in Geneva on 4 October 2016) developed a practice that brought together training in the decorative arts, long-standing use of pictorial techniques (oil, gouache and watercolour), and an extended teaching career at the Geneva School of Decorative Arts.
Drawn to drawing and painting from a young age, he attended the Geneva School of Decorative Arts to train in graphic design.
Shortly after completing his studies, he went to live in Peru: based in Lima with his wife Liliane Germond, he worked there as a graphic designer for four years.
On returning to Geneva, where he spent the rest of his life, he initially worked for the Humbert graphic design studio, before opening his own graphic design studio.
Alongside his professional activity, he taught at the Geneva School of Decorative Arts until his retirement; in family life, he was married to Liliane Germond, and the couple had three children (a daughter who died in 1968 at the age of 14).
Artistically, Sauthier painted predominantly landscapes, working in oil, gouache and watercolour; he drew his subjects from the Geneva region, Savoy, Gruyère and, occasionally, German-speaking Switzerland, and practised watercolour while travelling (Scotland, Venice, France).
An eye operation late in life led to a loss of colour vision: his last documented productions therefore include landscape drawings in pencil.
According to the available references, he exhibited regularly, notably at a gallery in Bern and later at the Galerie d'Etraz in Lausanne.
The market dossier records 47 auction results for paintings and drawings/watercolours and indicates documented public sales from 1992 to 2019.

The SIKART record lists this artist under the identifier 4020781.
