Balz Stäger
Born in 1861.
Died in 1937.
Balz Stäger (1861–1937), i.e. Balthasar Stäger, is a painter documented by oil paintings dating from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century.
The surviving titles and inscriptions — Notstall Ziegelhütte mit Glärnisch (1890), Aufkommender Sturm (1896), Abend am Katzensee (1903), « Frühlingswiese » (May 1901), Der Hardturm an der Limmat (1914), and Bad Schinznach am Ufer der Aare (1914) — testify to a recurrent interest in landscapes and topographical motifs.
Several works are monogrammed or signed and dated at the bottom; the dossier documentation mentions, in particular, dated inscriptions for 1890, 1896, and 1914.
Certain canvases bear an artist’s label on the verso, as attested for Abend am Katzensee (1903) and for the Pappelstudie (1896), information that reinforces the recorded attributions.
The presence of lots offered by sellers in Switzerland, Germany, and the United States indicates a commercial circulation of the works as catalogued here.
