Balthasar Burkhard
Born in 1944.
Died in 2010.
From the 1990s onwards, Balthasar Burkhard developed a body of photogravure work that privileges plays of material and tone, a technique documented as a salient aspect of his photographic practice.
His earliest recorded solo presentations include Photocanvases at the Zolla-Liebermann Gallery (Chicago, 1977).
He resided in New York, where his photographs were exhibited at The Swiss Center Gallery in 1981.
Upon returning to Switzerland in 1982, he continued his collaborations and exhibitions.
His projects in Switzerland include a solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bern (1 October–13 November 1988).
His work was also shown in France, notably at the Musée de Grenoble (12 December 1999 – 14 February 2000).
Works are held in public collections; for example, Sans titre (Torse), 1988, is held by the Musée des arts contemporains du Grand-Hornu.
The recent bibliography includes monographs and catalogues, notably a Scalo publication (2004) and an exhibition catalogue published by Steidl in 2018.
