Ahmed Louardiri

Born in Salé in 1928, Ahmed Louardiri began painting at the age of 31, after working as a gardener. His career as a self-taught painter thus took shape after he had spent a long time among the market gardens around Salé, where he earned his living from the age of twelve. He received a rudimentary education at a Quranic school. Millon reports that he attended it until the age of thirty and links this experience to a rapprochement with the Sufi tradition. According to VOSARTISTES.COM, the painter Miloud Labied introduced him to Mourad Ben M’Barek, an architect in Rabat, and Jacqueline Brodskis, who runs an art studio.
His proximity to plants, which shapes his manner of representation, is reflected in a body of work in which flora occupies a central place. At the beginning of his career, he drew flowers and trees on plain sheets of paper, which he gave to his friends. His paintings are described as covering the entire surface of the support and as populated by plants, palaces, mosques and figures. According to VOSARTISTES.COM, this fairytale world draws on the oral sources of popular tradition. Millon also notes references to Maghrebi culture, particularly traditional jewellery, colourful textiles and vivid colours. These elements complement a visual repertoire in which flora remains a major source of inspiration. A work listed as mixed media on canvas measures 163 × 64 cm.
His first exhibition took place in Morocco in 1961, at the Galerie Bab Rouah in Rabat. The subsequent milestones mentioned include the Galerie Benzit in Paris in 1964, the Festival International des Arts Nègres in Dakar in 1966, Dar America and the Galerie André Laurent in Rabat in 1969, and then the Hôtel La Mamounia in Marrakech in 1972.
