Peder Mørk Mønsted

The Danish realist painter Peder Mørk Mønsted—also known as Peter Mork Monsted—was born in Grenå on 10 December 1859 and died in Fredensborg on 20 June 1941.
He first trained at the art school in Aarhus, then entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1875. From 1874, he exhibited regularly in Copenhagen and also presented his work in Lübeck and Paris.
His travels took him to Switzerland on several occasions: he stayed in the Engadine in winter and on the shores of Lake Geneva in the warmer months. In 1889, he travelled to Algeria; in 1892, he visited Greece, where he was received by the royal family for half a year.
He brought back sketches from his travels and reworked them in his studio to develop paintings. This transition from drawing on location to working in the studio is a documented aspect of his practice. Before 1900, his landscapes were shown at the art exhibitions in Berlin and at the Glass Palace in Munich.
