Born in County Kildare in 1952, Elizabeth Cope is an Irish artist whose painting and drawing take people, places and objects alike as their subjects. She lives and works today in County Kilkenny. She studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, a course of study dated 1970 in her CV.
Cope says that she paints and draws from life, making no distinction between subjects: a person, a place or a thing can equally become the subject of her work. The recurring motifs she mentions include the self-portrait and her family, as well as animals — a dancing lobster, a plastic crab — and everyday objects such as brooms or tape measures. The body, represented at different ages of life, completes this range of subjects. She describes making a painting as a necessary struggle, a process that, in her view, does not lead to a definitive resolution but remains ongoing.
For 1993, her CV lists the Wexford Arts Centre and the Swiss Credit Bank Invitational in Zurich among her presentations. It also mentions her participation in “Naked Truth” at the Crawford Gallery in Cork. For 2011, it cites presentations at the Irish American Heritage Arts Centre in Chicago and the National Arts Club in New York. The corporate and organisational collections listed in her CV include Aguilar Associates, IBEC, Delta Airlines and Ketchum. Finally, her CV mentions the publication of *Seduced by the Smell of Paint* by Gandon Editions in Kinsale.
This profile brings together identity references for Elizabeth Cope and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
