Tom Slaughter (1955–2014) built a visual vocabulary from New York and coastal Long Island: buildings, boats and familiar objects recur across drawings, paintings and cut paper. An illustrator of eleven children's books, he extended this practice through media reaching different audiences, from the pages of books to printed posters.
Flashe paint gave him matte, opaque surfaces on which the artist's touch yields to clearly defined shapes. Untitled (Country), made in 2006, uses this paint on cut paper. Color of Night II (1996), held by the Museum of Modern Art, represents his printmaking: Durham Press published and printed this screenprint, over a metre high, in an edition of fifty. Graphic simplification thus connects the individually painted object with the multiplied printed image.
This profile brings together identity references for Tom Slaughter and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
