SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
Associated with the pseudonym Antoine Blanchard, Marcel Masson is presented through scenes of Paris during the Belle Époque. The walls of Montmartre and the suburbs are among his preferred subjects; several compositions take images of Parisian streets from the late 19th century as their starting point. The document also describes a lighter palette adopted to paint Paris in the 1900s and appeal to an American clientele, as well as a style influenced by the art of Eugène Galien-Laloue. At the 1958 Salon, he presented three views of Montmartre: Rue des Norvins sous la neige, Mairie du Vieux-Montmartre and Devant l’église Saint-Pierre. The document also notes his participation in the Galerie Marie Wild, the Salon d’Hiver, the Salons Populistes and the Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
An exhibition at the Café de la Paix in Paris is mentioned in 1979. In 1988, an exhibition devoted to Antoine Blanchard and Paris during the Belle Époque is noted at the Wally Findlay Gallery in Chicago. The City of Paris acquired five of his paintings. The document also lists more than five hundred paintings.
This profile brings together identity references for Marcel Masson and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
