Hendrik Schaap, a painter, watercolourist and draughtsman born in Delft in 1878 and deceased in Rotterdam in 1955, is particularly known for his city views of Rotterdam. His work takes as its subjects the lively life of the city as well as its historic buildings, bridges and harbours. Sources describe his manner as “smooth impressionism”, a characterisation associated with his depictions of Rotterdam’s urban landscape.
In 1911, he settled in Rotterdam, where he continued his work. One source mentions training at Delft University of Technology and at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The Artpeers directory lists him as Dutch.
Works cited by the Simonis & Buunk directory include “Markt am Rathaus von Middelburg” and “A view of the Kolkkade, Rotterdam”. A lot attributed to Schaap, entitled “Gasse in Rotterdam”, is described as an oil on cardboard measuring 33 × 24 cm, signed lower right and bearing on the reverse an inscription transcribed as “Streeg de(?) Rotterdam”.
This profile brings together identity references for Hendrik Schaap and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
2 references are documented at Dobiaschofsky. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
