Henri Joseph Pauwels (1903–1983), a Belgian painter born in Haasdonk and who died in Beveren, is also known by the variant Henri Jules. He generally signed his works “H. J. Pauwels”. His training took him from Paris, where he received academic instruction, to private studios in Antwerp. There he became familiar with the techniques and theories of the French Impressionists.
His repertoire encompasses landscapes and rural scenes, including farms, floral still lifes, seascapes and interiors. Views of the Port of Antwerp hold a particular place in it: cargo ships and activity along the quays often animate these views. His work, characterised by a poetic atmosphere, a luminous palette and an optimistic spirit, combines Impressionist and Post-Impressionist influences. He takes part in exhibitions in Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. His name appears in several publications devoted to Belgian artists, including Wim and Greet Pas’s *Biografisch Lexicon van de Belgische Beeldende Kunstenaars*, Arto’s *Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists* and Paul Piron’s *The Belgian Visual Artists from the 19th to the 21st Century*.
