Joseph Georg Winter

Born : 1751Died : 1789

The German painter, printmaker and drawing teacher Joseph Georg Winter—also known as Wintter—was born and died in Munich, in 1751 and 1789. His father, the painter Johann Georg, was his first teacher. From 1766, he was an apprentice at the Munich tapestry manufactory, where he worked until 1783; there he designed cartoons for tapestry weavers, notably for borders populated with figures and adorned with foliage. In 1784, he became engraver to the elector’s court and hunting establishment, and in 1787 was appointed councillor of the Court Chamber and a member of the Electoral Academy of Düsseldorf.

Printmaking occupies an important place in his work: he produced reproductive prints after Dutch painters and devoted several series to hunting scenes and to the elector’s hunting estates at Nymphenburg and Schleißheim. A sale catalogue also describes nine watercolours devoted to the growth of the stag’s antlers, mounted and each accompanied by a handwritten German caption; they are said to have been engraved and published in Augsburg in 1787 under the title Das aufsezen oder Wachsthum des Hirschgeweihes nach Natur genommen. Direct observation of the animal is also evident in a black-ink drawing depicting a stag from Munich’s deer garden: the inscription states that it was drawn from life on 28 August 1783.

Descriptions of sheets associated with his name also attest to the range of subjects addressed: an ink-wash drawing entitled “Ein 6 Monat alter Löwe”, monogrammed JGW and dated 1788; a group of seventeen etchings, most dated 1784, depicting animals and hunting scenes, among other subjects; and, finally, a study sheet signed and dated 1784, bringing together male nudes, a stag, a hunting dog and a horse. His works are recorded in collections in Berlin and Düsseldorf, as well as in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich.
