Graham Dean, born in Merseyside in 1951, trained in Birkenhead and then Bristol. His watercolour figures approach identity through the body and its emotional states. Working from photographs, he paints, tears and reassembles fragments: the figure thus emerges from the meeting of separate surfaces rather than from a single, uninterrupted image.
The creases and irregularities of handmade Indian paper influence how the surface absorbs the pigment. Foreign Correspondent (1987), at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead, exemplifies this exploration of watercolour on a large scale. In Hand (1985), held by The McManus in Dundee, a man turns away from the viewer while scratching his bare back. The Contemporary Art Society presented this work to the museum in 1988.
This profile brings together identity references for Graham Dean and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
