A Flemish painter active in the 17th century, Jan Miel is associated with the Bamboccianti group. Around 1636, he was in contact with Claude Lorrain; in 1640, he entered Andrea Sacchi’s studio.
His recorded works combine scenes of everyday life and landscapes: Rest in the Fields, dated 1642, is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Béziers, while Italian Peasants in Front of an Inn, dated 1647–1649, and Seaport with Figures, dated to around 1656, are in the Royal Collection. A Charlatan, dated to around 1650, is held at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. The body of work also includes religious and mythological subjects. The Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, oil on copper, 27 × 38 cm, dated 1650–1655, is at the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans; Aeneas and Dido Hunting, oil on canvas, 161 × 220 cm, is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Cambrai. Works attributed to Miel are also recorded at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musée Ingres in Montauban, the Musée Fesch in Ajaccio and the Rijksmuseum Twenthe. An auction catalogue lists under the name of Jan Miel a Roman market scene, oil on relined canvas, 49.5 × 67 cm, from a private collection in northern Germany. Its description brings together in the foreground a cobbler, a town crier, a fruit seller and a drinker in a tavern; on the left are the steps of the Capitol and the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Miel and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
References include catalogue entries and available results; they do not all represent completed sales. Attributed works and special lots are excluded from the priced results.
