The French painter Pierre Carrier-Belleuse is particularly known for his portraits of Opéra dancers, his panoramas and his works created on the Opal Coast. The son of the sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and brother of the painter Louis-Robert Carrier-Belleuse, he belongs to a family of artists. His drawings of dancers frequently appear in Le Figaro illustré; he exhibits pastels every year at the Société nationale des beaux-arts.
After receiving an honourable mention at the Salon in 1887 and a silver medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, he joined the Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1890, became a member in 1893 and taught at the Académie Julian during the 1890s. In 1895, he was appointed president of the Société internationale de peinture et de sculpture. The Opal Coast is another important setting for his work: he painted in the region on several occasions, owned a villa in Wissant and took part in the school founded by Adrien Demont and Virginie Demont-Breton. The nearby dunes provided the setting for several of his works.
Alongside his pastels, he created the Panorama de Notre-Dame de Lourdes (1881) and that of Jeanne d’Arc (1889); the Panthéon de la guerre, conceived between 1914 and 1916, was produced in collaboration with Auguste François-Marie Gorguet. Works recorded in public collections include several pastels at the Petit Palais, among them Tendres aveux (1894), Sur le sable de la dune (1896), Le Repos (1900) and Au réveil (1912), as well as Sur la dune, le scarabée and Au soleil (1902), held at the musée Baron-Martin in Gray. The entry also lists Le Miroir at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, Émile Jean Deschanel, enfant (1913) in Rennes, Fantaisie (1874) at the musée Crozatier in Puy-en-Velay and the Panorama de Notre-Dame de Lourdes (1881) in the municipal collections of Lourdes.
