Félix Varla (1903–1986) studied natural sciences at Tbilisi University before attending the city’s Academy of Fine Arts from 1922 to 1926. Arriving in France in the late 1920s, he settled in Montparnasse. In 1934 he married the Danish painter Ziré Binder. A working stay in Argentina from 1948 to 1952 preceded his return to Paris.
His figurative painting drew on Georgian rural life and Caucasian landscapes. Hunting, fishing and harvesting were recurring subjects, populated by slender figures. A “white period” gave drawing a particularly prominent role. Paul Sonnenberg devoted a catalogue to his work in 1988. In 2019 the Georgian National Museum in Tbilisi presented the exhibition Varla – Félix Varlamishvili, bringing his paintings before a new museum audience.
This profile brings together identity references for Félix Varla and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
