Aloys François Joseph Loir, known by the artist’s name Luigi Loir, had a career spanning painting, decoration and illustration. After his family settled in the Duchy of Parma in 1847, he studied at the école des beaux-arts de Parme in 1853; he is also recorded as a pupil of Jean Pastelot. His first recognised painting, Paysage à Villiers-sur-Seine, dates from 1865. He became known in particular for his ceiling paintings, an activity that placed his work in the field of painted decoration.
Several paintings held in public collections attest to his interest in urban landscapes and their atmospheres: L’Avenue de Neuilly, jour d’hiver (1874), at the Minneapolis Institute of Art; Avant l’embarquement, effet crépusculaire (1893), at the musée Barrois; and Le Point-du-Jour à Auteuil : crépuscule (1883), at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal. The city also appears in Le Métropolitain (1899), listed at the Galerie nationale de Prague, and in works recorded at the musée Carnavalet: Porte Maillot, effet de neige, la nuit, as well as Passage d’un char de carnaval rue de Rivoli (1912). The titles thus evoke places, movement through the city and particular moments, from snow to twilight.
His work also extended to printed images and advertising: he created drawings for the LU biscuit company, and a publication devoted to Lefèvre-Utile biscuits, L’Unique grand prix décerné à la biscuiterie française, appeared in 1900. A notice also mentions an illustration for Jules Verne’s Voyages extraordinaires in 1882. The reported distinctions mark his public recognition: a third-class medal at the Salon in 1879, a second-class medal in 1886, followed by a gold medal at the Exposition universelle of 1889. He was appointed chevalier de la Légion d’honneur in 1898. In 1914, he still presented four paintings at the Salon des artistes français. Luigi Loir died in Paris on 9 February 1916.
