Alexander Boghossian, known as Skunder, was born in Ethiopia in 1937 and died in 2003. His work brings the heritage of Ethiopian Christian painting into contact with surrealism, which he encountered while studying in London and Paris. Dreams and metamorphosis have an important place within this pictorial world.
Night Flight of Dread and Delight, painted in Paris in 1964 and held by the North Carolina Museum of Art, combines oil and collage. Two winged creatures appear in a star-filled space; novels by Amos Tutuola informed this vision. In Spring Scrolls, of 1983–84 at the Smithsonian, hanging coloured strips refer to Ethiopian talismanic scrolls. After settling in the United States, Boghossian also shared his artistic explorations through teaching, notably at Howard University from 1974 to 2003.
