Julien Dupré paints rural life and fieldwork in a naturalistic manner, attentive to observation and light. He studies at the École des beaux-arts de Paris in the studios of Isidore Pils and Henri Lehmann, as well as with Désiré François Laugée. He exhibits regularly at the Salon de Paris from 1876 to 1910.
His early compositions depict harvest scenes, particularly in Picardy; from 1880 onwards, he also paints animals observed in the countryside. His view of the rural world is rooted in naturalist painting; he admires Jean-François Millet and Jules Breton, and gives light a place in his depictions of rural life. He works between his Paris studio on boulevard Flandrin, shared with Georges Laugée, and the countryside, where he paints from the motif.
Presented at the Salon des artistes français in 1881, his painting Les Foins earns him a second-class medal. In 1887, he exhibits abroad for the first time, at the Chicago Interstate Industrial Exposition. He becomes a member of the Salon Jury Committee in 1890 and receives the Légion d’honneur in 1892. Works by Dupré are recorded in public collections: La Fenaison at the Saint-Louis Museum of Art and La Vache blanche, dated around 1890, at the Musée d’Orsay.
This profile brings together identity references for Julien Dupré and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
