Simone Pignoni

Born : 1611Died : 1698

Simone Pignoni, born in Florence in 1611 and deceased there in 1698, worked as a painter and draughtsman. Trained by Francesco Furini among other teachers, he explored female figures and mythological subjects alongside religious compositions. His activity included commissions for Florentine churches, among them Saint Louis Providing a Banquet for the Poor for the Guicciardini Chapel in Santa Felicita.

The Louvre holds a drawing of a young man playing a lyre, possibly Apollo, based on an ancient sculpture and executed in black chalk with white highlights on grey paper. The sheet documents his study of the human figure. At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a painting from the middle or later seventeenth century depicts a female saint whose identification as Rosalie remains tentative rather than securely established.

This profile brings together identity references for Simone Pignoni and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
