The German painter Carl Langhammer — also known as Karl — worked primarily in landscape painting, while his practice also extended to decorative painting and illustration. Born in Berlin in 1868, he studied painting there from 1885 to 1892 and became a master pupil of Eugen Bracht, before continuing his training in Paris with Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury. His career included travels to Italy, Greece, Hungary, Belgium, Holland and England.
From 1900, Langhammer also worked as a decorative painter and illustrator for various periodicals, including Le Monde Illustré, as well as for the Ullstein publishing house. He was appointed professor in 1911. A member of the Verein Berliner Künstler from 1890, he became its director in 1929. He was removed from the presidency in June 1935, then left the Reichskulturkammer in 1937.
Recorded exhibitions include a presentation at the Künstlergilde in Berlin in 1928 and, in 1932, an exhibition by the Verein der Berliner Künstler at the Glas-Palast in Vienna. The distinctions awarded to him include the State Medal of Saxony in 1909 and the Medal of Honour of the Kunstgemeinschaft in Vienna in 1932.
The titles and descriptions of several works document a range of subjects: an oil painting entitled Aufziehendes Gewitter über Kloster Chorin, signed at the lower right and measuring 53 × 81 cm, is described in an auction catalogue.
This profile brings together identity references for Karl Langhammer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
