A native of Leeuwarden, Hans Vredeman de Vries worked as a painter, draughtsman and designer of architecture. His understanding of the classical orders drew on Vitruvius and Serlio, available through translations by Pieter Coecke van Aelst. Antwerp publishers circulated his designs, helping to spread a Mannerist architectural vocabulary across northern Europe.
His publications on the orders include designs for dormer windows and ornament, engraved by the Van Doetecum brothers after his drawings. A first part appeared through Hieronymus Cock in 1565, with later editions extending its circulation. The Small Wells series, published around 1574 by Philips Galle and preserved at the Metropolitan Museum, brings this decorative inventiveness to more modest structures. The designer, the engravers who translated his drawings and the dates of successive impressions must be distinguished.
This profile brings together identity references for Hans Vredeman de Vries and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
