Zbigniew Makowski

The Polish artist Zbigniew Makowski (1930–2019) is associated with a Surrealist practice in which signs, numbers and letters create symbolic effects, against a backdrop of fascination with esoteric knowledge. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1950 to 1956, then received his diploma there in the studio of Kazimierz Tomorowicz. He took part in the 3rd Exhibition of Modern Art in Warsaw in 1959 and stayed in France in 1962. His career is also marked by the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Art Critics’ Prize and the J. Cybis prizes.
Two untitled works provide dated reference points: one is double-sided and dated 1960. Another, dated 1964, is executed in mixed media on paper; it is described as signed and dated and measures 240 × 310 mm.
