Mel Ramos (1935–2018), born in Sacramento, developed his painting within California’s artistic community, notably through contact with his teacher and friend Wayne Thiebaud. In the early 1960s he appropriated comic-book characters and participated in the emergence of Pop art. His work appeared in Six More at the Los Angeles County Museum in 1963.
He subsequently often paired female nudes with consumer products, bringing pictorial tradition into contact with commercial imagery. Despite this proximity to advertising, he retained an interest in the handling of paint and the presence of individual brushstrokes. In 2012 the Crocker Art Museum devoted a retrospective to his superheroes, nudes and other popular subjects. Flicka, an oil on canvas from 2011, belongs to his late production.
This profile brings together identity references for Mel Ramos and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
